What's Good: A
wonderfully old, grimy, and evocative slice of Americana, Bosse is like
a time machine back to an earlier era of baseball. Because of its
authentically old feel, it was used for some of the scenes in the movie
"A League of Their Own," and remnants of the film remain, like a sign painted
on the grandstand saying "Racine Belles" (one of the teams featured in
said movie). The stadium, built mostly of brick, has one of the more
attractive entrances I've seen, as well (for a picture, click
here).
What's Not So Good:
It is pretty old, and although that means
a charming glimpse into baseball's past, it also means peeling paint, narrow
aisles, and a general sense of decay. Folks who like old stadiums
will love this place, while those used to newer facilities may be somewhat
less thrilled. Also, due to the grandstand's semicircular shape,
foul territory is large and the seats are subsequently farther from the
diamond than at many older parks. These, however, are minor complaints
-- despite its age, Bosse is a terrific place to watch a ballgame.
