Stadium Minor League History:
PONY League
1939-1953
NY-Penn League 1957-1959, 1961-1995
Current Status: Demolished at the end of the 1995 season and replaced with "new" Dwyer Stadium
What's Good: Dwyer Stadium was one of those magical places that baseball fans dream about. From the cozy little grandstand to the small-town atmosphere to the incredibly friendly and generous fans and staff, everything about it was wonderful. One of the last wooden ballparks in use (along with Wahconah Park in Pittsfield, MA and Civic Stadium in Eugene, OR), a real sense of community pervaded the little stadium -- volunteers from the local Rotary Club staffed the little concession stand, and everyone seemed to know one another. Visiting here was one of the best experiences I've ever had at a ballpark, and the operation of the team serves as a fine example of baseball as a civic treasure that improves the quality of life in a small town, rather than baseball as an investment for wealthy businessmen.
What's Not So Good: It doesn't exist anymore, though presumably the new stadium (built on the same spot) enjoys the same congenial atmosphere, high grade of local fans, and community support.
