Stadium Minor League History: Frontier League 1993-present
Current Status: Home
of the Chillicothe Paints of the Frontier League (independent)
What's Good: V.A.
Memorial Stadium is a wonderful place to watch baseball. Set on the
grounds of a Veterans Administration hospital a few miles north of town,
the ballpark is mostly surrounded by trees, including some
that are very close to the playing field. A small, roofed, brick-clad
grandstand is situated behind home, with small bleacher sections down the
lines. There are no real "box" seats, though the benches in the first
seven rows or so have individual molded backs. The outfield wall
is plastered with colorful advertising, and the very simple electronic
scoreboard beyond left field is augmented by a manually operated one displaying
the line score. Despite the relatively small population of
the town, a sizable crowd was on hand during my visit, and the fans were
knowledgable, vociferous, and friendly.
What's Not So Good: The
only minor problem with the stadium was that the walkway in the grandstand
was in front of the first row of seats, so that the view from the first
few rows of seats would be occasionally obstructed by passing fans.
Other than that there's nothing I didn't like about this place -- it's
minor league ball at its best.
